Hair do's and hair don'ts

Hey everyone! The other week I got an email from Madison Reed, a hair colour specialising company, to ask if I could give you all a few tips on how to and how not to care for you hair. Now, I'm not an expert on hair but here are a few tips that I follow daily (although, sometimes I'm a bit of a rebel and break the rules, but don't we all!?)

Styling:

First up is: don't blow dry your hair after every wash - surely everyone has been guilty of this at some point but this is something that should probably be avoided. Up until the other month, after EVERY wash I'd blow dry my hair because I'm lazy and hate waiting however, I stopped as I realised just how damaging that could be. When I stopped I also realised that my hair looks so much better when it is naturally dried as it isn't so frizzy. And... can I just clear up that there is no way that you can catch a cold by having wet hair! In fact, it makes no difference wether you dry it or not if you're going to get a cold then you're getting one and there's not much that can stop it!

Wear low/loose hair styles as often as possible - I know it may seem impossible if you go to school, like mine, and have loads of rules stopping you from wearing your hair down but nothing is stopping you from loosening it a bit and giving your hair a bit of a break! One tip that always works for me, if I'm going for a sleek look, is that if I put a tad bit of hairspray on the palm of my hands/brush and smooth it over, this will make the flyaways stick back down and leaves me with a nice, sleek look.

Don't use dry shampoo as a replacement for normal shampoo - Ok, I'll admit it I've been guilty of this a few times, where I've woken up in the mornings after falling asleep thinking it will all be alright in the morning and I won't need to do anything but then, when I woke up, realised that it wasn't the best move to take. The reason why you shouldn't ALWAYS use dry shampoo is because it stunts hair growth by clogging up the hair follicles, making them unable to breathe and grow properly. 

Brushing tips:

The next thing is: don't brush wet hair - This is because when your hair is wet it is basically like elastic and if you brush it then you are more likely to make it frizzy or break it. Although it's tempting, just don't do it. Although, you can use a wide toothed comb which isn't as bad for you hair.

Buy the right brush for your hair - To find the perfect brush, run the bristles along your hand and if it feels nice and smooth then it'll feel nice in your hair but if not, just keep on looking! There's a brush for every hair type! Here are some tips for different hair types:

• If you have thick hair, pick a staggered brush that will make it easier to detangle it when brushing. 
• For short hair, perhaps choose a small/medium barrel brush which would create small flicks to your hair, if you style it correctly when drying.
• People with medium/long hair should use a paddle brush (trust me, it's a saviour) as it makes hair smooth.

Don't keep on to old, broken brushes with damaged bristles - By keeping brushes with bristles that have frayed or bent, you are tearing your beautiful locks! After all, no one wants damaged hair from something that can be replaced so easily.

Washing tips:

Scrub your scalp gently when shampooing - Instead of scrubbing harshly, use your finger tips to massage all the dirt, oil and product build up out of your hair. When you massage your scalp, it is a lot more gentle but still exfoliates your scalp, just with out the harshness.

Don't forget to brush your hair before washing it - This is something I am terrible at doing, I think it's because I usually have my hair up and take it down 5 seconds before washing so I never really think about it. By brushing your hair before washing it, you are decreasing the amount of knots that will be left in you hair after the shower, when your hair is way more fragile.

Use cold water at the end of washing your hair - When you do this you are sealing the cuticles and locking the moisture in. This has to be one of my favourite tips because I feel that it actually makes a difference straight away.

A perfect conditioner

Hey everyone! So it has been quite a while since I last did a review (over two months ... oops!) so I decided just to sit down and type up a review of my newest, but definitely one of my favourite conditioners ever! The search for a new conditioner came about when I realised just how awful and dry my split ends had started to look and feel. I'm not even kidding they were the worst they had been in a long time! I think this is mainly because of me being a little fuss pot over the fact that I have to be completely happy with my hair before I even start to think about stepping out the door in the mornings. As for that, my hair is constantly being straightened, as it is far easier to manage that way and to be honest I don't use heat protection because I'm a very forgetful person! Although, I don't ever use my hair dryer anymore so I think I might use that as an excuse to say that it isn't as bad as if I was to use my hair dryer!

As usual I took a very very long time picking a conditioner to buy because I always really want to make sure I pick the right one  and not end up with a product that I hate. After picking up and putting down a lot of different bottles, my Mum picked this one up and it had everything I wanted! It was the Garnier Ultimate Blends Weightless Nourisher Conditioner that makes hair look healthy and easier to brush. I also picked up Tresemme Keratin Smooth shampoo which basically restores hair and reduces frizz too - super helpful! However, I might just do a separate post for the shampoo because I'm guessing you are here to read about the conditioner.

Although the conditioner has not got a strong smell, which is something I usually look for in hair products, it works wonders on my hair. Even from the first wash my hair just looked incredible and as though I hadn't been making it go through hell the past month or so. When I read the front of the bottle, I instantly knew that it was going to be amazing as it said that the conditioner had olive oil in and in the past I have literally sat there for hours watching YouTube videos on how to repair damaged hair and olive oil has always been something that has popped up. Even though it contains oil it really doesn't weigh my hair down or leave it greasy and horrible like most other conditioners which is something I love so much about this, as it means I don't have to worry about it getting near my roots. The bottle is also super big, compared to other conditioner bottles, which is a good thing since I love it so much and it means it wont run out anytime soon! I don't actually think there is anything that I don't like about this product which is definitely a first for me and conditioner, in fact for most hair product really! Overall I love this conditioner and would really recommend this for every hair type wether you have frizzy hair, straight hair, damaged hair. I think this product is definitely worthy of a re-purchase because it is just so good as it does everything it says it does and a bit more to be honest! Shea Moisture shampoo and Hair Smoothie review

The smell of coconuts has always been one of my favourite scents and I have always had curly thick hair so when I was offered the chance to try out a shampoo and hair smoothie that smelt of coconuts as well as being made for my hair type I obviously had to say yes! Although there were other products made specifically for other hair types such as; aged, colour damaged, dry hair etc.

Firstly let's start off with the smell which is probably the best shampoo I have ever smelt before! It honestly smells like coconut ices which if you haven't smelt before, why not?! For those who haven't smelt them it smells like the sweetest scent of coconut, you don't ever want to stop smelling it! Usually the aroma of shampoo lasts in my hair for about sixhours before it slowly fades away and I'm left with unscented hair however, this lasts until the next wash! Yes, the next wash!!! Which actually surprises me as this NEVER happens with other shampoos.

The things I look for in a shampoo are pretty simple, it washes my hair well and smells good, and if it does other things that's just a bonus! The bonus in this shampoo is that it's made for thick curly hair, making the curls look smooth and hydrated. I found that it also brought out the colours of blonde in my hair from where I dip-dyed it earlier on in the year, I don't know if the shampoo is actually supposed to do this but it does and I'm not complaining!

Usually I can tell when a shampoo is good because my hair co-operates with me in the mornings and goes up with out a fuss and this is how I know my hair was loving this new shampoo! As it is also anti-frizz I didn't feel the need to want to straighten my hair so much because the curls were not frizzy and they actually looked nice for once.

Curl enhancing smoothie

This is a product I have never heard of before and is slightly different to what I thought it would be like but that doesn't mean I don't like it, in fact I love it! The reason why I say it's different is because it's like a cream and I'm used to applying things to my hair then rinsing it off but with this you keep it in and dry/style like normal. Like the shampoo it is made to make your curls look smooth and un-frizzy and I found it works just as well using normal shampoo before applying but the effects don't last as long.

The other thing, apart from the smell, that I really liked was that it wasn't filled up only halfway it was all the way to the top so it feels like it's worth your money that you pay. It's also really good if you don't use conditioner (like me) because it doubled up as a leave-in conditioner as it made my hair soft and silky which was just a little extra I found whilst testing this product!

Overall I love these two products and I'm so glad that I was offered the chance to try them because they're AMAZING! 

Shea Moisture is actually going to be available to buy in the UK in October as they are now going to be stocked in Boots stores! Which I'm very happy about because it means I can try some of their other products they stock.

Herbal Essences - vs - Batiste dry shampoo

Hey everyone, it feels like for ever since I have done a post involving something to do with hair products so I thought that I would compare two of the most recognised brands that sell affordable dry shampoo. All the links to where you can find these products mentioned will be listed at the end of the post, enjoy reading!

Before starting this post completely I'm just going to let you know what I look for in a dry shampoo and that is a product that can turn a head of greasy 2nd day hair into luscious locks in seconds that happens to smell good as well.


Batiste - 'Blush'

Firstly I am going to start of with the first ever dry shampoo I ever brought, unless you count the mini travel set one that my Grandparents got me for when I went to Germany and I literally emptied the whole bottle in one use because I had absolutely no idea of what dry shampoo was! I know many people who swear by Batiste and that is usually me because it is so affordable and you can pretty much pick it up where ever you go, I have even seen them being sold in the mini Tesco's down the road from me! For me I love them because of their wide variety of scents and they have a dry shampoo for almost any type of hair including; thin hair, thick hair, coloured hair as well as having one for every natural hair colour there is. As well as this Ella Henderson is also the face of Batiste which is AMAZING  because I love her songs although I have yet to try her own dry shampoo that she helped create.

But thats enough of that, now its time to hear about how well it actually works!  Like I said before this was my first dry shampoo I brought and it has been sitting on top of my draws ever since, that happen to be a great place to store all of my beauty products, mainly because of how clean and fresh it makes my hair look even on the most greasiest of days where it looks like I have dunked my hair in a bowl full of oil, well not literally but you know what I mean! As I said at the beginning Fragrance is a big thing for me and if it smells bad then its staying on the shelf but as with everything else Batiste never fails to disappoint! It's quite obvious from what the shampoo is called that it's going to have a floral scent to it and yes it does theres no doubt about it, only for an hour or so but I don't let that change my opinion of what a brilliant product it is as it lasts through out the whole day with no problems.

Things that I would improve - It's only a small thing but sometimes it can feel like a major problem, I find this product can make my hair feel as though I have put so much product in it where as in actual fact I've only sprayed it 2-3 times all around my hair. When ever this happens it can really weigh my hair down making it a nightmare to manage.



Herbal Essences - Ignite my colour shampoo

The next dry shampoo I brought was Herbal Essences which is made to brighten up dull hair especially dyed hair although I wasn't too bothered about brightening up the dull dyed parts of my hair since only my ends have been coloured and I usually only put the dry shampoo on the roots of my hair. Many of you may know Herbal Essences for their large range of affordable great smelling shampoo's and conditioners and the stunning smells carry on to their small range of dry shampoo's. Since Batiste has been my go to dry shampoo for around 2 years now I thought it was finally mix things up and try a new one! So after what has to be the most quickest decision I have ever made when choosing a product for my hair, I picked Herbal Essences Ignite My colour Dry Shampoo which is rose scented.

Compared to Batistes dry shampoo I found it really light in my hair which didn't weigh it down and its smell lasted until around lunch time which is a MASSIVE difference from Batiste! Something else I really like is the way the descriptions are written on the back (simple things) but it just makes it seem so much more friendlier along with making it sound like the company puts loads of thought into every single detail about the product. I also like that they have matching shampoo's and conditioners which is a Little extra compared to what Batiste has to offer even though Batiste is a strictly dry shampoo company.

Even though there were some really good things about this product there were a few things that I didn't really like for example, they do not sell a bigger version of the bottle where as most companies usually have a choice but to be fair it is a normal size but it's always nice to have a choice! Another thing I didn't like was there wasn't a lot of option to choose from (I think maybe 3) which is perfectly fine but I do like having a wide variety of choice like Batiste have. I know they have to match their shampoos and conditioners but I'm pretty sure that they do actually have shampoo's for different types of hair e.g. thick, thin etc.

Over all I think I prefer Herbal Essences dry shampoo is the best one to buy although Batiste is always going to be one of my favourites and there is definitely nothing wrong with the brand I feel Herbal Essences just has that bit more extra than Batiste has to offer. However both brands are wonderful and I will happily buy either product again!

Argan Secret - Luxury Travel Pack Review

 Hey everyone! Hope you are all having a great time and summer, I have just come back from my holiday so the photos will be up soon! Before my holiday I kindly got sent this Luxury Travel kit which came in very handy when I was on my holiday! The links to where you can buy this product is going to be listed at the end of the post, hope you enjoy reading :)

Firstly as you can probably guess by the title all of these products involve argan oil in some way or another (not the brush though). Before using this product I didn't really know what argan oil is used for so after googling what argan oil does for your hair this is what I came up with:

Argan oil is an oil that comes from the Moroccan argan tree. It can be used for both skin and hair, it can moisturise, condition and make hair softer as well as skin whilst fighting dandruff as well. 

Many people said that argan oil has also helped them tame frizzy hair and undo some of the damage caused by colouring as well as getting rid of split ends! Because its an oil obviously it probably will make your hair greasy however I will speak about how I dealt with this later on. Arian oil also promotes shine, gloss and growth within hair! 

Before leaving I had time to think of how I was actually going to use these products with out making my hair greasy and yucky, because who wants horrible hair on holiday!? I washed my hair with the shampoo and conditioner but only putting the conditioner on the ends of my hair (just like I usually do) After I put the argon oil onto my hair starting from roughly about my ear so nothing got really greasy. 

 Argan Oil

This is the first product I decided to use out of all of them because I knew I wouldn't be using that much on my holiday , and it was also quite a big bottle for an oil, so I could start using it before it was time to go. Like I said in the last paragraph the oil was only applied to the ends of my hair, after being patted with a towel, as my hair gets greasy easily so I wouldn't apply it to the roots!

As I found out when searching what argan oil can do to your hair, it can get rid of frizz and leave you with nice curls instead of looking like you have a poodle on your head! To do this I just applied the oil to my hair and stroked it downwards making sure most of it was covered (...thats the best way to describe it anyway). 

Hair Masque




This by far is my favourite thing that came in the pack! I had never used a hair masque before so when I used it I was slightly nervous that it wouldn't work or it would make my hair unbelievably greasy but it was the exact opposite and it made my hair look amazing! After applying it and washing it off my hair looked like it could have been from a shampoo ad, it was so shiny and soft whilst making my hair look un-damaged. This product is definitely something I would think about buying again as it made me feel great as well as making my hair look wonderful at the same time!

How to use

After shampooing your hair, get out the shower and apply this all over and leave for 15 - 20 minutes then rinse off.I didn't do this next bit but you probably could if you wanted - apply conditioner as normal then dry and style how you wish!



Shampoo and conditioner

Shampoo: This product is as good as any of the shampoo's I have brought before mainly because it washes my hair exactly how a shampoo should whilst leaving it smelling great as well as feeling good too.

Conditioner: Just like the shampoo this did everything that it said it would it made my hair soft and didn't make it greasy even when I managed to pluck up the courage to put it all over my hair  (...well actually I put it there by mistake and then carried on with it).

Like the oil and the masque they both smell incredible it reminded both me and my mum of Christmas which made me love them so much more than other shampoo's. The only thing that I would change about the bottles is they are both really really difficult to squeeze, I even had to use 2 hands at one point and quickly scoop it off my knees (now if thats not skills, I don't know what is!) 


Mini travel brush

This is such a good idea to put into a Travel kit since many others just give you the usual; shampoo, conditioner and maybe a dry shampoo but I found this more helpful because I could just pop it into my bag and it would be there if I needed it but if I didn't then its not a biggie because it didn't take up much room. I also like this because my hair is quite thick but this little brush gave the big ones a bit of a competition as it brushed through my hair so easily!

Over all I would highly recommend this kit especially the hair masque because that stuff works magic on your hair!

Lush Montalbano Shampoo Bar review

Hey everyone! Hope you are all having a great day, this week I have decided to talk about why I have decided that Lush shampoos are so much better than normal shampoo from a bottle. I hope you enjoy reading and all the links to where you can buy any of the products can be found at the end of the post! 

The other week my friends and I went into town together and as per usual we ended up in Lush smelling every single bath bomb or other product we could. For a while I have been wanting to buy a shampoo bar just to test it out and see if they were any good or not. After looking for a while I finally decided to get the Montalbano bar which has green olives to improve the thickness of the hair and to make it more elasticated. As well as rosemary, Sicilian lemon oil and lemon juice giving your hair a healthy looking glow!

Like many things in lush there is heaps of selection to choose from like the Seanik which leaves you're hair feeling volumized and makes it look brighter. There is also the Karma Komba shampoo bar which cleanses the hair as well as getting rid of any products that may not have fully came out of your hair yet. You can find these plus more if you go online or go into your local lush store!

Compared to other 'normal' shampoos  shampoo bar is soooo much better! Each shampoo bar lasts for around 3 months which is amazing especially because a normal shampoo would probably last a whole month less! As it is from Lush it's also not tested on animals and is hand made too! Even though I have used this about 10 times since buying it there is hardly anything that has changed about it; it still has its colour, no large chunks have been broken off and it still has the same results as it did the first wash! 

How to use :

When I first got my shampoo bar I did think it was a bit of a waste of £5 however, when I got home I watched a few videos on different ways to use this bar. Before watching the videos I thought you had to crumble the WHOLE bar onto your hair but then I realised eac h bar can last for up to 3 months each! The best way I found was to rub the bar on my head with the bar in the palm of my hand. You just have to treat it as though it's normal shampoo so you; make your hair damp, use shampoo then rinse as you normally would. There are other ways to use it, for example, rubbing the bar into your had to create a lather then massage into your hair.

Over all this has definitely replaced my other shampoos and even my conditioner because this leaves my hair so soft and silky as well as making it glow I feel that I don't aways need to condition after washing my hair.

Maria Nila shampoo and conditioner review

Hey everyone! I hope you are all having a nice day. Today Im going to be reviewing my Maria Nila shampoo and conditioner which helps making your hair looking and feeling fabulous just that little bit more easier! Before you read this I just want to say this product has been sent to me and all my opinions are completely my own.

When I first received this product I really liked the pastel colours that the bottle is decorated in and that instead of pump, like I'm used to, it had a simple flip lid which I actually prefer as sometimes with the pumps they don't always get all of the shampoo/conditioner out when it’s ran out. I also really liked the scent of the conditioner as it was blackberry that is one of my favourite scents the shampoo was more of a pomegranate scent which I don't mind but it’s not one of my favourite smells but surprisingly its actually really nice and doesn’t smell too strongly of pomegranate. 

The shampoo is made to leave your hair feeling and looking super soft as well as adding a puff of life into your hair.  I got the shampoo that specifically focuses on illuminating the colour in your hair as well as strengthening and adding an immaculate shine to your hair. They both include a colour guard complex to reduce colour loss and protect your hair.

Like the shampoo the conditioner protects the colour in your hair with the colour guard complex. It also has violet pigments and blackberry extracts which neutralises the golden shades in your hair leaving your hair looking luminous and healthy looking.

Both the shampoo and the conditioner have products in them that are 100% vegan and have not been tested on animals. I usually stay well away from ‘weird’ coloured shampoos/conditioners and normally just go for the plain old white coloured ones because pretty much all good shampoos are plain however these have defiantly changed my mind about using products that are weirdly coloured! 

For best results wet your hair then apply the shampoo massage it into your head (making your covered in bubbles, the best bit) wash it out then apply the conditioner. I like to only apply conditioner to the ends of my hair and not so much the top but you can apply it where ever. Leave it in for a few minutes (3 is probably best). Dry your hair like normal then style!

New buys!

Hey everyone, February is nearly over and I thought I would show you somethings I have bought this month! Hope you enjoy reading! I now have twitter so if you want to follow me then just click here! 

During February I was in the search for yet another new shampoo since the last one was bit on the empty side. So I decided one of the best places to go would be Superdrug mainly because the one near me has such a good selection of shampoos and conditioners. I was instantly drawn to the Urban shampoo which was probably because it was the shampoo with the brightest colours on the packaging it was also the shampoo that had been opened the most too (just my luck). I was a bit annoyed simply because as it was a pump that once it had been opened couldn't be closed and you could just tell people had been putting this on their hands (why do this!?) and smelling it when I could smell it from where I was standing. Since both bottles left had been opened I just asked for some money off it because who actually wants to buy used product for full price but the lady said it would take ages and there would be no point however there was an delivery coming in later in the week. So I went back to find that luckily none of the bottles had been used!

The shampoo smells so good! I don't think I've ever had minty shampoo before but it smells A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Its also a deep cleaning shampoo which I think is what my hair needed because it would look so dull and horrible before but now its super fluffy and shiny! I find my hair more easy to style now I don't know if its because of the shampoo or simply because its the holidays and I actually have time to do it? Maybe its both but seriously if you have the chance to but this shampoo honestly you should  BUY IT! The only downside to this is there is no conditioner which is either because the shop didn't stock it or because they don't have a conditioner to match but if they ever bought one out I'd probably be their first customer!

I have also recently bought some bath bombs from Lush! Which smell and look absolutely incredible! They also popped a little catalogue in my bag which I find super for if I want to buy something in the shop I just know exactly what I want to buy although we all know how tempting it is to buy more than what you need in Lush!

 The first thing I picked up was the Butter ball, which if anyone read my Shopping trip with Jess post then you would know I bought a butter bear from there (we named him Steve junior), which is made from the same ingredients as that.

The second thing I bought was a Honey Bee bath bomb which if you like sweet smells your probably not going to be a big fan of. However I think it smells heavenly and thats coming from someone who likes more citrusy types of smells as you will find out in the next paragraph!

Lastly I picked up the Fizzbanger. I don't know why but my Mum, Sister and Jess (http://jessicaarr.blogspot.co.uk) all said they didn't like it although both me and my Nan really liked it at first you're not really sure about it then once you smelt it a couple of times you start to realise that its actually quite nice. The label they printed onto the bag to seal it said "With warm cinnamon leaf oil for explosive, toffee-apple scented bath times." Which I think sounds pretty amazing!

L'Oreal Paris shampoo & conditioner review

The name of this shampoo is actually L'Oreal Paris Elvive Nourish and shimmer Highlights shampoo & conditioner but lets face it that would have been an extremely long title. As I said I would do a review on this I have, so enjoy reading!

When using the shampoo and conditioner

 Usually when I go shopping I come home with anything but  shampoo/conditioner like last time when I came home with  the Umberto Giannini Skinny curls product but this time I  came home with exactly what I left the house  wanting.  Since I have dip dyed hair (That has faded quite a  bit) I needed a shampoo & conditioner that would bring  out the blonde in my hair Although this is a  shampoo/conditioner that focuses on highlighted hair I  thought it would still work on my hair and...IT DID! Even  better than my other shampoo that is especially made for  blonde dip dyed hair. 

To be fair this was taken on a particularly bad hair day
and a cloudy one too!

This shampoo/conditioner smells A-M-A-Z-I-N-G I usually spend ages in the shampoo aisle just picking up shampoo bottles and smelling them (Please tell me you do this too) then when i find the smell I like which is usually coconut look at the bottle to see what it does for your hair then realise its not for me. However this time I just looked at the offer (£1.99) then looked at what it does but I forgot to smell it, luckily for me it smells delicious. 




What I did


Rinsed my hair with nice warm water
Put some shampoo on my hand and made my hair all foamy 
Washed it out
Put conditioner on the hair below my ears
Waited 3-5 minutes (It felt like forever!)
Washed it out
and dried it
ta-daaaa!

Basically I just told you how to wash your hair normally     ~ I'm so clever  -.-
